Do you want to feel more free whilst performing in front of an audience? To be able to embrace imperfection and turn your flaws into your greatest assets? Have you forgotten your playful side and want to rediscover it? OPTIMISM ON STAGE: an introduction to clowning will help you to achieve all of these goals and more!
By playing games together and taking part in various performance exercises, your teacher (comedian Andy Casper) will guide you through the first steps of clowning. The workshop will emphasise having pleasure on stage. It will not only open you up to a new way of thinking about performance art but will also be a really fun weekend.
Whether you have only been on stage a handful of times or you’ve been performing for years, ‘’OPTIMISM ON STAGE: an introduction to clowning’’ is for you. We will explore:
- Sensitivity to the audience
- Celebrating failure
- Bafflement
- Vulnerability
- OPTIMISM
Previous students have said the following:
”Andy is a great teacher” – Luke Messina Meginsky
”I wasn’t sure about clowning before I took a workshop with Andy but I am now a devotee clown.” – Serena Smart
”I once took part in Andy’s workshop and it was great for my stand up, helping me find and trust in my sense of play. I’d recommend this for anyone looking to improve their performing (of any kind) or just trying to have a little bit more fun. A lovely experience.” – Teddy Hall

This workshop is presented by Andy Casper, winner of 2022 and 2024’s Clubbie for ‘’Most Dedicated to Nonsense’’. Andy has been performing stand up comedy for over 6 years and has a unique (clown influenced) style. Andy brought his first ever hour long clown show ‘’Bone Man Rides Again’’ to the Edinburgh Fringe in 2024. It became an underground cult hit with the chant ‘’Bone Man! Bone Man!’’ reverberating throughout the walls of the venue on many nights.
Despite always having flirted with so-called ‘’alternative comedy’’ since the beginning of his career (he ran the clown cabaret show ‘’The Sadness Cabaret’’ for many years), he didn’t formally start clowning training until 2022. This was when he took an intro clowning course with Kiva Murphy of the BIG Improv School. It sparked a compulsive passion in him and he never looked back. Since then Andy has trained with many highly regarded clown practitioners including Viggo Venn, Dan Lees, Josh Glanc, Gabriel Chame Buendia, Peta Lily, Ale Risorio, and Àngel Bonora. The pedagogy Andy draws from is in the tradition of the Philippe Gaulier School with an emphasis on finding the pleasure in being on stage.
